University of New Mexico students will be able to pick up a No. 2, chili-cheese fries and a cherry limeade on their way to class as soon as the Student Union Building opens to the public.
Sonic is coming to the SUB.
Student Union officials have been signing contracts this month for eight food joints in the remodeled building.
The completion date for the $25 million SUB renovation is still unknown. The project is seven months behind schedule.
Students, faculty members and community members will have "a good selection" to pick from for lunch at the new union, said Walt Miller, who runs the SUB day to day.
"From the super healthy to those who just want to have french fries and a hamburger," Miller said.
Sonic, typically a drive-in fast-food restaurant, will replace McDonald's as the burger option. Sonic will serve its full menu, including breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs and ice cream, Miller said.
Restaurants will have different schedules, but food will be available at the SUB from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., he said.
The remodeled SUB was most recently scheduled to open in May, but that was before the university fired the contractor.
UNM terminated Silver Construction, the project's general contractor, in February, citing an inability to meet deadlines and provide workers.
Earlier this month, the university hired K.L. House Construction to complete the job.
Mike Brogdon, president of K.L. House, said he's still evaluating what needs to be done.
He plans to give the university a new construction schedule sometime this week.
"We're still trying to get a handle on it," Brogdon said Monday. "But, it's moving along pretty good."
